Norway Pond, a central feature of the town of Hancock, reportedly had ice two feet thick this winter. That felt like bad news for the fish in our little koi pond in our backyard garden, which is slightly more than two feet deep, but which had sprung a leak some time in December causing the water level to drop nearly in half. Covered in snow, with the barest opening in the top thanks to our winter pond heater, we could only wait and see what might have become of our fish once the ice and snow melted after the bitterly cold winter.
When the coast was finally clear a few weeks ago we peered into the pond, holding our breath. There they were, still a little slow in the cold temperatures, but alive and seemingly well. Wow.
