We think we’ve seen a sign in more than one restaurant over the years proclaiming to young couples that if the child is born in the restaurant s/he will enjoy dinner for free at the place the rest of their life. It’s an interesting promotion probably meant to convey the families-are-welcome quality of the establishment. Of course, it’s doubtful there’s ever been a lucky winner.
We don’t have such a sign posted in the Fox Tavern though we’ve used the line with a couple of obvious contenders over the years sneaking-in a night out before a due date, and before dining-out was going to cease to be an easy option for a few months. Still no lucky winners.
That could be about to change. A robin has chosen to build a nest over our Tavern terrace which, technically – were we to have such a sign posted – is part of the restaurant and, therefore, would entitle each of the five young ones to dinner on us forever. They are likely to help themselves to anything from the lawns and gardens anyway, so we can relax and enjoy being part of their entry into the world. They surely won’t have expected to find such an audience waiting.
