A year ago the garden on our back field was still just plans on paper. By the time we were ready to plant it was already June 1st. Here we are, April 23rd, and thanks to our expert farmer, Jan Buonanno, we have heads of lettuce planted and rising. Plus garlic. The herbs from last year are starting to percolate, beginning with the chives. We are waiting to see how the asparagus comes up. Harvesting the asparagus is still a year or two off, but the strawberries that went in last year and thrived, so it seemed, should be ripe for picking in early summer. Potatoes will get planted soon, then kale, then carrots, parsnips, then on and on. Beans. Tomatoes. Summer squash. Eggplant. Whatever makes the chef happy.
